Recent Bus Changes are Good for the Heights

Open Letter to the Public

We all know that new development and the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail have changed the way we get around Hudson County. Jersey City in particular has seen dramatic changes in recent years. As a result, Coach USA recently had to cancel routes 3, 5 and 231 and reroute the 10 and 99s. Coach USA officials based these changes on route studies that show low ridership along the old routes and the potential for higher ridership along the new routes.

While Coach USA’s decision to change bus service was strictly based on economic considerations, the overwhelmingly positive feedback that the Central Avenue SID has received about rerouting the 10 and 99s to Central Avenue confirms that this was done in the best interest of the Jersey City Heights as a whole. However, the Central Avenue SID recognizes that the new routes will inconvenience some riders who live along Palisade Avenue. We pledge to work actively with these riders and community leaders to address their need for reliable service to New York. We must work together to call on New Jersey Transit to update the mass transit master plan for our area, improve the current Palisade Avenue routes and provide a new connection to New York.

On behalf of the Jersey City Heights community, the Central Avenue SID wishes to thank Senator Nick Sacco, Assemblyman Vincent Prieto, Mayor Jerramiah Healy and Councilman Bill Gaughan for speaking at the press conference held on August 22 to celebrate the new 10 and 99s routes. In addition, we would like to thank Assemblywoman Joan Quigley, the City Council, especially Councilmen Steve Lipski and Peter Brennan, and Mayor Healy’s Deputy Chief of Staff Dominick Pandolfo for supporting Coach USA in their efforts to preserve service in the Heights. We are counting on these leaders’ continued support as we work to satisfy the transit needs of those on Palisade Avenue.

Sincerely,

President Michael Yun and the Board of Trustees
