Effective May 4, 2022, New Jersey retail, grocery and foodservice businesses may not provide or sell single-use plastic carryout bags. This law will prohibit all single-use plastic bags, no matter the thickness of the plastic. To be considered a reusable bag in NJ the bag will need to be washable (either hand wash or machine wash), have stitched handles, and be manufactured for at least 125 reuses. The stitched handle requirement rules out the use of thicker plastic carryout bags. In addition, all polystyrene foam foodservice products are banned for use and sale.
In response, Central Avenue businesses (via their SID program) are working together to make our seventh annual Reusable Tote Bag Campaign. CASID will coordinate the production of our popular reusable tote bags for distribution among some of Central Avenue’s favorite shoppers and local residents. Local businesses that choose to sponsor this campaign will have their business name, address, and phone number printed on the bag. Sponsors will also receive their fair share of the bags (the final number will depend on the total businesses participating) and distribute them to their favorite customers.
