Beyond the Plate Food Tours, in collaboration with the Central Avenue Special Improvement District (CASID), are excited to announce a walking food tour through six culturally diverse eateries along Central Avenue. After eight years of running tours primarily in the historic downtown neighborhood of Jersey City, Alessia Aron, owner of Beyond the Plate, picked the Heights as the next neighborhood to guide curious diners through because of the close proximity of so many delicious mom-and-pop restaurants.
“This is a great way to meet the local chefs behind the dishes you’re sampling and discover the stories that inspire the food,” says Executive Director of CASID, Alexa Lima.
The first tour launches on Small Business Saturday, November 27th, and runs from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM, guided by a local Jersey City foodie. Group size is limited to 10 guests. Tickets to a tour are $75 a person and must be purchased in advance from the website. Guests can expect generous food tastings from six eateries, representing cuisine from five continents. While the stops may change from time to time, the initial list of restaurants include:
- Andrea Salumeria (Rated best italian deli in NJ)
- Irmas (Mexican/Salvadorian)
- Ozu Foods (Japanese)
- El Gordo (Peruvian)
- Griot Cafe (Haitian/West African)
- The LoDG (Rated the best donuts in Hudson County)

While there are no alcoholic pairings on this tour, guests will enjoy special non-alcoholic beverages at select locations to pair with the plentiful food tastings which may include birria tacos, poke, donuts and so much more. Tours are scheduled to run every Saturday.
