New Central Avenue Menu Promotes Healthier Living

Contact: David Diaz

Jersey City, NJ – Jersey City’s latest addition to restaurant row is making strides.
Central Avenue restaurants and businesses are working together, through their Special Improvement District program, to encourage local residents to live healthier with the launch of the new “Central Avenue Healthy Menu” this summer. This menu is the first of its kind in Jersey City and showcases ten healthy food options found in the shopping district.

“At HolaDoctor we are concerned with the health of the community and want to start changing eating habits,” says Mercedes Bermejo, Vice President of Marketing at HolaDoctor Insurance Services (353 Central) who helped spearhead the Healthy Menu idea. “Nearly 1/3 of U.S. adults suffer from obesity. Finding affordable and healthy food options in the neighborhood is important.”

In the first edition of what may grow into an evolving seasonal menu, the ten featured businesses including Andrea Salumeria, Dulce De Leche Bakery, El Gordo Restaurant, Gino’s Restaurant and Pizzeria, El Sabroso Restaurant, Los Tres Chilitos, Renato’s Pizza Masters, Wonder Bagels, Dahlia’s Ice Cream Spot, and Angel Azul Bakery offer a variety of wholesome food choices and encourage you to try something new. This menu proves it is possible to eat healthy while eating out. In addition to finding a cactus salad and frozen yogurt (among other things), menu items are reasonably priced between $4.00 and $14.00.

“With over 50 storefront locations in the food service industry within our ¾ mile shopping district, Central Avenue has really become a dining destination,” says Sanford Fishman, a longtime pharmacist from Bond Drugs and CASID President. “There are plenty of healthy food options in our neighborhood that many people are not aware of although demand for it is increasing. This menu highlights some of those options and makes it easier for local restaurants to promote healthier food choices.”

The new Central Avenue Health Menu helps participating businesses cross-promote and is a supplement to existing menus at each establishment. Menus are available at participating restaurants and menu sponsors such as Yoga In The Heights, Bond Drugs, Jersey Cycles, and Jersey Drugs.

“What healthy dining options are there in the shopping district? It is a question I often hear,” says David Diaz, CASID District Manager. “Take a stroll along the walkable neighborhood main street to discover that the healthiest part of Jersey City's restaurant row may soon be the Central Avenue Special Improvement District. It is a dining destination at the center of Hudson County.”

The new Central Avenue Health Menu is available online. A list of all Central Avenue restaurants is also available through our Restaurant Guide.
